In 2022, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presetented the first exhibition of Indigenous Australian artist Sally Gabori (c. 1924–2015) in Europe. Born around 1924 on the remote Bentinck Island in the north of Australia, she lived a traditional life as part of the Indigenous Kaiadilt community before being displaced to the nearby Mornington Island in 1948. It was not until 2005 that she created her first painting, and over the next 10 years, until her death in 2015, she would embrace her newfound gift for spontaneous creativity, creating over 2,000 paintings of startling originality.

Gathering more than 90 works, including those presented at the Fondation Cartier, the catalog offers to discover the singular and colorful work of this extraordinary painter, who is one of Australia’s most important artists.
