The indigo dye tradition began being used in Japan in the 1600s during the Edo period. The rich blue tint became popular amongst the working classes who were restricted from wearing bright colours and silks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe leaves of the indigo plant are harvested and fermented in ceramic vats, this fermentation time is essential for the deepening of the blue colour. Indigo also carries natural antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties in the form of flavonoids and phenolic compounds, creating an environment, fittingly, unfavourable to bacteria.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eEach tote was immersed in the vat for an hour before being lifted into the air. As oxygen met the fabric, the colour shifted from brilliant green to a deepening rich blue.
